BURGER AS BODY (2024)

Burger as Body (2024) is a performance piece by Vita Kari that will take place on Monday February 12th from 3pm - 6pm.

This public performance will consist of Vita Kari (they/them) symbolically devouring their own body via burgers attached to their arms and legs. Kari’s hand-made headpiece of foam burgers is adorned with designs reminiscent of their grandmother's clothing, eliciting narratives of diaspora and hyperfemininity through the artist’s queer lens. The piece will include an offering of free burgers to onlookers, seeking to foreground the agency of the audience in consumption and spectacle.

Building on their last public performance, Trapped in a Can, Kari’s work highlights the blurring of digital and physical boundaries. Through the employment of virality and transparency, Kari also seeks to explore themes of commercialism and mimetic desire.

This performance series serves as an introduction for the artist’s Solo Exhibition for their MFA Thesis opening on March 28th, 2024.

Vita Kari (they/them) is a non-binary artist known for creating immersive art pieces that involve illusion. Working between conceptual online video performances and everyday locations, Kari highlights contemporary issues of digital identity and commercialism, with a focus on audience engagement. Kari is currently an MFA candidate at Otis College of Art and Design.
